The doctors’ strike was not only about the two-year house officer period.

Also, it’s the fruit of her imagination that the “two-year rule” is applied across the Western world.

It’s actually the reverse: medical graduates across Europe are granted their warrants after one year. That includes the UK.

Alison Bezzina’s brother was not the only one to be left permanently disabled because they were born when no properly trained doctors were available.

And it wasn’t just complications with birth or after birth, either. One child known to my family was left permanently in a vegetative state because an emergency appendectomy had to be performed by a surgeon and anaesthetist working at the kitchen table as they were “locked out” of the hospital.

Right or wrong are not absolute but contextual. This is one of the fundamental lessons civilisation teaches us outside the absolutes of simplistic black-and-white thinking which is the hallmark of primitive societies like Malta’s was (and in many cases, still is).

Not stealing food is right. But if not stealing food means that your child starves for four days, then not stealing food ceases to be right and becomes wrong.

Some people find this too complex to understand.
