You wouldn’t have been able to do that, because you are intelligent.

Intelligent people cannot ‘enjoy their lives’ in the way you describe.

They would sink into depression and ennui in no time at all. That kind of life is for the dull-witted.

Unfortunately that is the life of a researcher -it is a lifetime (the emphasis is on lifetime) of sacrifice, shoestring living and complete dedication.

The first thing my tutor taught me was this is not an 9 to 5 job, and that you know when you start your day, but not when it will finish.

If I wanted to become rich, I would have done the same as 75% of my secondary school classmates, stopped studying at 16 and started working (mostly in the construction and services industry).

Most of them, now in their late forties, are retired and enjoying their lives.

“Epileptics can hold a driving licence if the epilepsy is controlled.” – actually this would still be very dangerous as persons can stop being compliant or require higher dosages – the only way one can notice would be if one has an attack.

Eight thousand euros may seem like a cruel joke, but believe you me, your generation is pampered.

When I was your age there were no scholarships at all. You’ll just have to make the best of it, and take a bank loan if necessary.

When you graduate and those professional fees start pouring in, you can pay it back, and live comfortably for the rest of your life.

I’ve seen your bio and your credentials are rock-solid. You’ll be snapped up in no time at all should you decide to work in Malta.

In today’s world, it is not which institution your have obtained your Ph.D from or which institution you are currently working in that really counts, but what you have achieved and which research groups form part of your academic network.

There are a number of research groups at the University of Malta in particular within the health/life sciences, chemistry and engineering, that form part of strong international consortia and have produced high quality research and have published in very high impact journals (e.g. Nature) as well as holding a number of international patents or licences.

So though in certain areas of study one might describe them as mediocre, in others this are far from being mediocre.

And my experience with most foreign universities is not very different – some areas are excellent others are mediocre or even poor.
