That’s a sartorial subject I’ve been meaning to tackle.

The rule is that a man should always cover up his arms, except in two very exceptional cases:

1. When playing tennis, polo or similar. Hence the polo shirt.

2. When posted to India, Singapore or the Med. Within this category, the only men who look good in short-sleeved shirts are RSMs and similar.

Everyone else should wear a long-sleeved shirt and roll up the sleeves, just enough to keep the elbows covered.

They’re appalling in general, but when worn by fat, prominent figures they look even more atrocious.

For Pete’s sake, if it is an informal outdoor event and the heat is unbearable, just wear a long-sleeved one and (properly) roll up the sleeves.
