Someone thought that “to shoot down” is the same as “to be sceptical of”. But it isn’t.

The scale of meaning of words is somehow alien to the Maltese brain.

They had told that magistrate that they had “no grounds to proceed against Mr Sammut because he had received false information” and therefore it was not his fault.

The magistrate then pointed out that Mr Sammut had listed his client as being able to speak English when it was evident that the client could not. Then it snowballed from there.

Oh I doubt that. It’s a failure to understand basics, like the difference between a bank guarantee and a guarantor for a loan.
