Thankfully, the majority of Hungarians have pulled the carpet from under Orban’s feet.

They have invalidated his referendum after he organised an expensive campaign full of anti-EU and anti-immigrant rhetoric which harked back to Hungary’s totalitarian past, and which profoundly disturbed the few surviving Jews in Hungary.

In true dictatorial fashion, he will be validating the result retroactively. But his hopes of leading an illiberal revolution in Europe at the head of the Visegrad group of countries have been dashed.

The EPP should get its act together and throw out Victor Orban and his Fidesz party. He is a disgrace to Christian Democracy. His policies are an insult to both Christianity and democracy.
