You make all this sound like the Maltese aren’t at all racist and that all objections to foreigners, including those from Africa, are logical and reasonable. They aren’t.

Malta has been racist for as long as I can remember. Why do you think I was always reluctant to order a drink from a bar, or get a taxi home, or interact with anyone I didn’t know throughout my teenage years? It is because I knew that there was a very good chance that I would get treated badly, spoken down to and/or cheated out of my change just because I spoke English.

Hating those who aren’t ‘like us Maltese’ is a much loved tradition among many Maltese people. And I know exactly where they get it from.

I got off lightly. People who are foreign in every sense of the word have a much bigger disadvantage as far as these people are concerned, and therefore are going to be targeted more. It is doubly worse for those who have darker skin, because it will be assumed that they are poor and are even more defenceless (viva Malta Socialista) and will be seen as fair game by anyone.

Malta is prone to this sort of xenophobia, because for many years many were encouraged to believe it was right and just, and have passed it all on to their children.

Yes, there is racism everywhere, but the difference in Malta is that people are too backward to understand that their views are offensive and unacceptable, and that they should keep them to themselves.

Why should they keep them to themselves? For the same reason that you hold your tongue about what you really think of somebody when you know that it will cause offence and upset others.

I know of a woman who ended up dead and butchered when the father of her little daughter – who was present when this happened – stabbed her 50 times after he fuelled up on cocaine and went to pick a fight with her.

And how many people have been shot in arguments in this country? How many people have been ‘taken out’ by contract killers in drug-related turf wars?

Grow up and open your eyes.
