I was particularly struck by how many people were unaware of the primary goal.

A shop was used as an example. Sales had fallen and the staff were demotivated. The situation was turned around by establishing the primary goal and bringing the team on board with their ideas and suggestions.

With the primary goal in mind each employee came up with suggestions of improving conditions in his or her particular area. Many of the suggestions were taken up and a time frame was established to implement them.

So, cheese counters were manned by a trainee. Shop windows received greater attention because those in charge of displays had more time to work on them. Better lighting and organised store-rooms improved efficiency.

As conditions improved, new customers were attracted to the shop. Sales increased.

MEPs can ask as many questions as they like, but without establishing a primary goal and taking suggestions on how to address issues followed by action, it would be an exercise in futility.

Questions should be followed by suggestions and an action plan. Too many questions often result in no action ever being taken.
