When I go to government clinics, I see unemployed Maltese people and Maltese people who are below the tax threshold, all expecting free medical care.

No, they did not all go ‘legally’ and they did not all have papers.

One ship containing Maltese emigrants was turned away by Australia because the country’s ‘coloured’ quota for immigrants had been filled already.

That’s just a random example.

And many of those who were allowed off the ships were taken straight to camps, given corrugated metal and told to build their own hut. There was no sanitation and no running water, no drainage and no furniture. They lived like animals, digging holes for their faeces around their hut and walking to a standpipe for water.

Don’t extrapolate from your family’s experience – who might not have told you the truth anyway. Read up on the facts.

The only people who have ever described Malta as “a jewel in the Med” are the sort of Maltese who have never left it, or who wear blinkers at all times, even when travelling (if and when they travel, that is).

Nobody else does.

You haven’t seen much of the Mediterranean if you think Malta is this sea’s jewel.
