‘people fully expect the Labour Party to behave immorally and incorrectly, even if they vote for it’

That is exactly why they voted for it. There would be no tangible way for them to make money other than having a very corruptable government. Can the PM pull anything straight now, of course not.

You are unable to understand that when people who are perceived as having or who are expected to have high standards behave immorally, incorrectly or in an underhand manner, especially in politics, there will come a time, sooner or later, when they are hamstrung by their behaviour.

This is especially so with the Nationalist Party, which is held by the electorate to a far higher standard than the Labour Party.

The Nationalist Party paid a very high price for its immoral compromises with John Dalli, Jeffrey Pullicino and Franco Debono. The Labour Party will not pay a similarly high price for its incomparably worse behaviour because people fully expect the Labour Party to behave immorally and incorrectly, even if they vote for it.

The Nationalist Party’s downfall began when it started to be seen as the party of compromise with wrong-doers.

It lost respect.

People never voted for the Labour Party because they respect it.

But the vote for the Nationalist Party was always a vote of respect, and when that respect went, the votes went with it.

People admire Muscat, but they don’t respect him.

Right now, the Nationalist Party is neither admired nor respected.

The fact step on the road to getting back that respect is doing the right thing and communicating to people exactly why it is the right thing.

Maltese people don’t understand the distinction between right and wrong, but only the distinction between x’jaqbillek u x’ma jaqbillekx.

In this particular case, it’s pretty simple to communicate and it should be communicated: you lose far more by giving up your oil-drilling rights for free than you do by rescuing migrants and processing their papers.

“Il Giornale” is not exactly at the highest echelons of Italian journalism. The expression “metodo Boffo” was concocted after its then director, Vittorio Feltri defamed Dino Boffo, the editor of the Catholic daily, Avvenire by accusing him of a homosexual relationship.

However, this journalist speaks of having sources in both Malta and Italy. The outright denial of the Maltese government does not suffice.

It was most absurd that an Italian boat would arrive in Malta, unload the cadavers and proceed to Italy with the survivors unless there was some underhand agreement between the two countries.

This incident definitely gave the game away.

Italians are no fools, and they would not have done that unless they were getting something in return – especially when until a couple of years ago, there were frequent disputes between the two countries where illegal migrants should land.

Today, Italian television channels reported that Italy was involved in 20 search and rescue operations off the coast of Libya.
