You've never actually been anywhere near the "bridge to nowhere", have you?

It's as crowded as Havana (the one in Paceville) on weekend afternoons - thick with birdwatchers, snogging couples, mums and dads and their 2.1 kids, and teenagers taking selfies or posing for sexy Facebook shots.

The 'bridge to nowhere' moniker was coined and used by the same members of the chattering classes who had Parliament House down as a 'cheese-grater' and the theatre next to it as a 'roofless theatre'.

And all three nicknames revealed nothing but their incredible ignorance and how you should never assume that people from a tal-pepe background are by definition educated - an assumption I NEVER make because I grew up in that mind-numbing milieu and know for a fact that most of them have the minds and educational level of children or teenagers.

The 'bridge to nowhere' is a restoration/reconstruction of something that existed already but was destroyed over time. The alternative to creating that attractive construction, which is not a bridge as they say, was spending a lot of money getting rid of the remains of the original which had been an eyesore in the harbour for decades. Or leaving the eyesore as it was.

I'm sorry, but do politics have to do with waving banners at mass meetings?

The people who wave banners at mass meetings generally know very little about politics.

Politics are part of the world we live in and not something separate from it. Real politics are considered in the context of current affairs.

You will generally find that the most catastrophically uninformed adults - young and old - are those who grew up in homes where the adults very deliberately Did Not Discuss Politics Or Current Affairs Because These Are Things We Do Not Discuss.

People like me do not come out of nowhere. I grew up in a family where politics and current/world affairs were discussed as part of normal conversation.

My sons did, too.

It makes all the difference.
