Odd - that&#039;s another example of Maltese people who spoke little or no English unwittingly picking up a certain kind of British pronunciation. The dominant pronunciation of Buddha among the British is Boo-Dah.

So boo-dah became an insult among the Maltese, its original meaning lost in time, while Buddha itself is pronounced with a short u.
