Does anybody know why ‘bloomer’ is still in common usage as the Maltese word for women’s underpants, rather than ‘qalziet ta’ taht’?

Bloomers were Victorian underwear.

Odd – that’s another example of Maltese people who spoke little or no English unwittingly picking up a certain kind of British pronunciation. The dominant pronunciation of Buddha among the British is Boo-Dah.

So boo-dah became an insult among the Maltese, its original meaning lost in time, while Buddha itself is pronounced with a short u.

How interesting.
