This is the thing, you see – commonly owned parts like a terrace are, strictly speaking, undivided. In other words, it’s not a matter of measuring it out and parceling out lots.

Commonly owned means just that – for example, when husband and wife own a house, they own the whole thing together, as distinct from he owning that half and she owning the other half.

I can’t imagine how he has claimed the right to build his summer house there.
