I was a working mother and my sons have done well academically and otherwise.

I think that on the whole working mothers are far better role models for their children than non-working mothers.

We always tend to forget the role model aspect of things. A woman who does nothing all day but meet her friends and prolong simple tasks to fill the day is not a good role model for children.

Children with working mothers are more independent and have more initiative, and they also learn how to cope with and tackle a large workload because they see their mothers do it.

Yes, in fact you are right. The girls I saw grow up over 25 years in the hamlet where I live have all been extremely ambitious, hard-working and outward-looking. They have done well for themselves.

Meanwhile, women of my Sliema background tend to have spent their entire post-childbirth lives avoiding any kind of paid work.
