Regarding Commonwealth citizens needing to have been resident for a certain amount of time before being eligible to join the British army – the time period is five years. However this does not apply to Commonwealth citizens from Cyprus and Malta – i.e. they can join even if resident for less than five years. I know because I recently had thought of of joining (but decided not to – I probably don’t have what it takes).
