Here I am talking about private conversations or conversations that are heard, at most, by the rest of the group who are physically present.

But the newspaper comments board are read by thousands of people and any exchange that takes place on them is not between two people. It is massively public and the real audience is not the one individual with whom you are engaged in a ‘discussion’ but all the others who are reading it.

If more people understood this, more people would engage with racists and the politically screwed-up on the comments boards.

The Labour Party understood it perfectly well before the general election, which is why it had small armies of elves and trolls glued to the comments boards pretending to be ordinary citizens fed up with Arriva, Austin Gatt, the ‘Nats’ and shocked by an arlogg tal-lira.

There’s your answer then. Call it corporate loyalty.
