He was always on cloud nine during his lectures and they were, more or less, what one would call soliloquies.

It wasn’t the politics, but the size, the nature of the place, and the people. Basically, we’re talking about a middling sized town stuck on a rock between Tunis and Sicily – literally the toenail of nowhere. And to make matters worse, the town is a nation-state and cut off all round by water and travelling documents, so you can’t even drive to the next city.

Lucky you. The only way I could leave back then was by becoming an illegal immigrant, leaving on a tourist visa and disappearing into the system until found and deported. A couple of my friends did that, but I didn’t want to live that way.

I was determined that my sons would not have to go through the same thing, and fought like crazy for EU membership and their Get Out Of Jail cards.

They live life on the surface and like nothing ugly or unpleasant or even serious to disturb it. Even when they have grown up in hell, or are going through hell in their lives, they come out smiling and trilling about how wonderful everything is, keeping the conversation light, because that is how we are supposed to live and survive.

Those who wanted a change fought for it together with Eddie Fenech Adami, and they got it. It was not easy. Hamalli and taghna lkollers always made themselves heard in Malta. This has always been the case.

We might not be having so many mass meetings this time round but we have a stronger media with blogs where people can voice their opinion. One should never give up and resign oneself to any unacceptable situation.
