The Mercouri prize is €1 million, a sop next to the €52 million that was budgeted by the previous government for this event and which was supposed to be paid through public funds.

I say supposed because the ECOC monitoring panel are clearly concerned about the financial commitment being proposed.

The true ‘prizes’ are the regeneration of the harbour area and legacy: legacy in terms of infrastructure and more importantly human resources.

There are currently hundreds of Maltese creators in all fields who have invested millions in themselves to attain professional standards. Most are still abroad.

This was a golden opportunity to create a platform for them and for Malta. It is being squandered magnificently.

Incidentally at the moment there is a significant chance that the Mercouri prize will not be awarded. This means nothing in monetary terms but a slap in the face diplomatically.

I didn’t learn this from family but from school and friends.

Then once I grew up I realised that actually things in Malta are pretty good, and thought it was an unfair observation to have made.

Now I think I know where it all comes from. Everything Labour does is bad. They are so hung up on their own prejudices, narrow-mindedness and egos that they fail to achieve real results and real quality.

Due to this, it seems to many that everything in Malta is bad since it takes so long to get rid of their mentality and to establish a more professional one, and by the time that has been achieved in some way, we have a change in government and it’s back to Labour all over again.
