Perhaps we should be looking more closely at the reason for mass migration out of Syria. It can’t just be Assad.

Their calls would have been picked up if one or more of them were under the agencies’ radar, which is probably not the case so far.

I just read your column. Yes absolutely right. I do agree with your argument.

No training was required to pull of the Paris attacks, agreed, but a high level of radicalisation was definitely present to want to blow themselves up.

It was not a “coordinated attack”. It was eight men going out with guns and explosives at the same time and shooting in locations very close to each other, some of them picked out clearly randomly because they were en route to the main event at the Bataclan theatre.

The definition of a coordinated attack is one in which the coordination requires a lot of organisation in terms of attack and targets, as with the crash into the Twin Towers.

This is the equivalent of a group of women arranging to go shopping together and popping separately into different shops. That is not a coordinated shopping expedition.

Why on earth would their telephone conversations have been picked up? They would have had to be under surveillance already for that to happen. If I pick up the phone and talk to my friend about guns and bombs, how can it be picked up?

It was not a lone wolf attack. There were eight men involved. Lone wolf is one man.

Let’s not give those people more credit than they deserve. They were a bunch of men with weapons who went out into a crowded nightlife area and began shooting and detonating explosives among unarmed and defenceless people. It doesn’t take any skill and it doesn’t take any coordination. It just takes weapons and psychological problems. In fact, as soon as the anti-terrorist police arrived, they were finished because they had no escape plan.

It was well planned because they must have used ‘clean’ communications which weren’t ‘picked up’ by security agencies.

The attacks were well synchronised and left the desired effect: mayhem on the streets of Paris.

I totally agree that anyone can pick up a gun and do the same thing randomly, but that is not what happened in Paris.

This attack had the hallmarks of a lone wolf attack because of the randomness of the targets chosen and it wasn’t ‘picked up’ (it is hard to prevent an attack from a lone wolf because they act alone, usually self radicalised, and might also have other psychological issues which make them act randomly).

In the eyes of violent Islamists there are no innocent victims. The victims are part of the democratic system who elected the people in power, so they are just as good as targets as the executive is.

This coordinated style of simultaneous attacks was seen on 9/11 in the US. A well executed plan which changed the game for security agencies globally.

Perfect summation of this silly phrase “well planned” meaning is within the context of shooting attacks as happened in Paris and elsewhere.

No criminal will ever reveal his action, time or place of the attack.

Our Mr Prime Minister looks as naive as ever when he makes a “pull out” statement about the CHOGM.

He certainly showed an amateurish state of mind and a boyish attitude which embarrasses the entire country. Certainly lack of foresight when he volunteered to have it organised in Malta.

If they can’t catch big-time criminals operating under their very noses – half the Italian mafia seems to have decamped to Malta, and Maltese criminals abound – how can they stop a terrorist attack?

Fortunately, Malta is safe from Islamist or any other kind of terrorism, for two reasons.

1) Malta is a media wilderness. It’s like playing the best Shakespeare at the Istitut Kattoliku.

2) There are no valid targets. The Maltese are neither fellow Muslims, nor properly Western. They’re in a sort of off-white, semi-Arab no-man’s land. That makes them even more insignificant media-wise.

Exactly what kind of planning do you need to pick up a gun and some explosives, walk into a theatre containing a crowd of unarmed people, and begin killing them?

None at all, other than getting hold of the weapons. It happens all the time – but when it’s done by some whacko on a holiday island in Norway, or some student on a US campus, or some weirdo outside an American cinema, nobody talks in awe about how well planned it was. They just say that he grabbed a gun and began shooting.

But in this case, people say it’s well planned and organised because the alternative to thinking that would be facing up to the fact that anybody can pick up a gun, walk into any cinema, theatre or restaurant, and begin shooting. Because you know what? They can. And that includes you.
