Daphne, I can assure you that my mother had a lot of say. Mum was an American citizen, who was born and grew up in the USA. Her parents, Maltese immigrants, were married in the USA.

So you can imagine what mum’s attitude was when they came back to Malta. True, she had no choice because at that time hardly any woman had a choice in Malta (I am 64).

But she brought us up in an atmosphere of equal rights between the sexes, to think before we speak and above all to mind our own business to say the least.

As an afterthought her elder sister, my aunt, was the one who set up the National Council of Women.
