In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Yup. From the Ancient Greek "mandra" (enclosed space or barn), via the Latin "mandra". Compare the Sanksrit "mandura". Possibly the only proto-Indo-European word in Maltese. Fancy that, eh?

Deborah Schembri and Helena Dalli looked stunned in the video for good reason. They were seeing the hanzir in Debono Grech, the hanzir in Luciano the pervert who was not doing anything about it but actually smiling all along, and the worst kind of ‘Maltese masculinity’ displayed and cheered on right before their eyes, even by women such as Justyne Caruana. That’s a true ‘maqjel’, people. Sad.

‘Mandra’ is not a pigsty. Like ‘maqjel’ (pigsty) it is used to indicate dirt and mess (“ghamiltuh mandra”), because it is that bit of enclosed land at the back of rural houses where household rubbish is kept. In some villages, the small enclosed space at the rear of the building, which nowadays people wistfully call ‘the garden’ or ‘courtyard’ is still referred to as il-mandra.
