I happen to have known quite a few persons who have served as Malta’s representatives abroad or, at least, in the Foreign Affairs Ministry here.

Most of them, both from the older and the younger generation, were well suited for the job entrusted to them and did their best to acquit themselves honourably.

Among them, incidentally, were those whom the present administration threw out immediately it came to power.

One did find the occasional person who was not 100% up to standard, of course. But to state that there has been a long-standing practice of appointing cronies as ambassadors or High Commissioners is not true at all.
