Mintoff’s first proposal was that an Algerian gas pipe that was being planned to connect with Italy, after passing through Tunisia, should pass through Malta as this made more economic sense.

At that time Malta was not a member of the EU, and the other 7 members of the 4+4 group were not impressed at all by Mintoff’s logic. In fact, that proposal sounded the death knell to the group, which stopped functioning.

The situation today is different. A link between Malta and mainland Europe already exists without any cost to Algeria. Malta is in the EU and a link to it is a link to the EU. All this is due to the initiatives by Nationalist administrations, opposed all the way by the Malta Labour Party.

Economic links are positive, but one must ensure that these are above board. Malta’s performance with the way it granted visas to Algerians to enter the Schengen area in Europe, is not one that engenders confidence in Joseph Muscat’s administration.
