That is one of the curiosities of perception and memory: we perceive authority figures to be taller than they really are in relation to ourselves.

And when you were that age, the eye specialist would have been an authority figure.

What strikes me is not quite the shortness of Maltese men, but how everything seemed more European, more Western, pre-2004. Ironic, isn’t it?

No bright lights and strobes and rubbish, no self-important men strutting around with that sense of urgency found only among salesmen, no big empty spaces where the crowds should be, no attempt at turning a political summit into a marketing event.

The scenes outside Castile could have been filmed outside 10 Downing Street.
