For the beautiful and glamorous Agatha Barbara’s visit, my school had organised a little “fwuttbol” match. The teams were manned by the usual jocks (precocious children and all that). One of them later went on to play for Floriana, then for the national team. Even aged seven, he could simulate injury like the best Champions League player. So at one point he fell down in the penalty area, writhing in agony and clutching his groin.

I turned to my mate Spudkin, later to become a high-flying Eurocrat jock. ‘What’s he doing that for?’

‘That’s what they do. I saw it on TV.’

I spotted Agatha Barbara. She was not impressed.

Mary Fenech Adami, may she rest in peace, never visited us in school. Alfred Sant was not in a relationship I guess at the time he was our prime minister. So there was no point waiting for surprise visits.

In reply to Malteser. In all my 12 years at St Dorothy's School and St Dorothy's Convent, and a further two years at St Aloysius College, no dignitary, real or pseudo, ever visited.

Innocent children.When I was young and dignitaries visited our school we would be very excited.We little knew that the spouse of the Prime Minister was nothing special.

It’s actually much worse. In the 1980s there was no pushy, flashy and on-the-make Spouse of the Prime Minister to contend with. Dom Mintoff was married to a proper lady, and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was a spinster…sorry, bachelor.

The finished project will have cost one million Euros and will be managed by Agenzija Sapport. So why doesn’t government cough up the money and have done with it? They can raise a substantial sum by calling in the money spent on th Muscats’ personal cars and drivers.
