The new secondary school for boys in Gozo has had an entire flight of stairs boarded shut, leaving a third of its classes trapped if there is a fire. The emergency evacuation plans still indicates the same stairs as emergency escape route. Banana republic

Doors leading into fire escape staircases should open only INTO – not out of – the staircase.

It should be impossible for anyone to enter into a floor from the fire escape stairs unless it’s a staff member with a key.

This safeguards people in panic mode from running straight into a floor where a fire is raging. The only doors opening “outwards” – i.e. from the staircase out – should be those that lead to a safe place in the open.
