Maltese wasn’t spoken at home when he was growing up, it wasn’t spoken at St Edward’s where he boarded, it wasn’t spoken in the circles in which he moved as a young man, and it wasn’t spoken in England, where he emigrated in 1964 only returning on his retirement in the late 1990s.

Speaking a language and understanding it are completely different. His refusal to reply in Maltese is not due to snottiness but lack of ability.
