There might not be the vulgarities and blatant pro government propaganda of the 1980s, but Malta has still not matured as a developing independent country.

Malta would have much higher standards of governance, accountability and transparency with a genuinely non partisan public broadcasting service which politely but firmly and fairly scrutinises and hold our politicians and institutions to account.

Instead there are government-appointed yes-men who merely regurgitate the government’s line with the odd splash of Opposition news to keep the Broadcasting Authority happy.

Not watching TVM will not solve the problem. A fundamental change in the composition of the Broadcasting Authority is a must since the present arrangements assume that balance is achieved by giving an equal voice in the Authority to the two main political parties, and total control to the state to appoint TVM's editorial staff.

If we have not reverted totally to the "Dardir Malta" stage it is because we have had some persons of integrity who rose above the pitfalls of such an arrangement, and some politicians who respected such integrity.

Whether the fish stinks or not (quoting the Maltese proverb) depends on its (political) head.
