Yes, Joe Gaffarena always conducted a lot of his business by way of barter and cash. However, he did bank at the Bank of Valletta, which was also John Dalli’s favourite bank.

When Joe Gaffarena sold his interest in Daewoo, millions in cash were withdrawn from the Bank of Valletta to pay him off. This was reported in the Labour Party press at the time. As one of his ex employees I can vouch that he did have Bank of Valletta accounts.

It is possible that Marco Gaffarena is following in his father’s footsteps when it comes to banking. He certainly is doing that in the way he conducts his property deals and in squatting on government land.

He is also using the same lawyer. Keith Bonnici has been involved with the Gaffarenas since 1999.

He was disbarred a month earlier. So the date is neither a coincidence nor does it have anything to do with the matter.

Lawyers can be permanently disbarred. If they are convicted of a crime carrying a prison sentence of two years minimum, they lose their warrant for life, and automatically.

For example, if Cyrus Engerer were a lawyer, he would have lost his warrant permanently. That puts the gravity of his sentence into some perspective.
