Actually if you think about it there is quite an element of truth in “Dak li taf u mhux lil-min taf”. Perhaps it would be better phrased as “Mhux lil min taf izda dak li taf fuqhu”.

Not for Mr Cuschieri perhaps, as I cannot imagine him knowing anything about anything or anyone, but I can think of quite a few other people who are where they are not because of who they know but what they know about him.

Our freshly-appointed Ambassador to Greece is in fact wearing (or “rocking”, as the moderns call it) Byzantine court dress.

Below are miniatures painted somewhere round our neck of the woods, probably Sicily, around 1200. Observe the long sleeves on some of the figures. They were popular at the time. Now they have made a comeback, thanks to our ambassador. An homage, as it were, to the glories of Constantinople.

Trouble is, Constantinople is now in Turkey. And Eurovision, as always, looms on the horizon like some sequined ghoul.
