You’re quite wrong. Men get fat when they’re pining away or having a long-drawn-out existential crisis. They shed the weight when they’re in love. It’s totally irrelevant whether it’s reciprocated or not. And here I’m talking about fat, not the heaviness of middle age.

Tucking in a deux does not make a person fat. Eating copiously, and mainly carbs, does. Eating copious amounts of carbs is comforting in the absence of human comfort.

Sorry, but I have more life experience than you do. And that’s why I’m largely indifferent to Bedingfield’s fate. I’ve known him for two decades at least and he’s never been anything but a prize jerk. That’s why his wife left him. Women don’t do that easily.

Sharp jerks are tolerable, even entertaining. Thick jerks, not so much.

I doubt it. When men start eating everything in sight and growing to those proportions, there’s just the one reason: they’re miserable. They’re not miserable because they’re fat, but fat because they’re miserable. If Gland were to fall in love, for example, he’d shed the kilos in a nanosecond. But there’s the rub: when you’re in that state, you’re just not open to it.

It looks as though it’s a battle between containment and explosion.

When a person is in such a bad way, and it is so obvious, keeping him there is to turn the knife deeper daily. And that is what Muscat is doing: waiting to deliver the final blow in the name of mercy.
