I thought Dr. Gonzi was being harsh at the time, as my experience of a Labour government was rather limited (I moved here in ’91).

I’m never embarrassed to be Maltese. Every country has hamalli. It’s just that in most European countries, the percentage of hamalli is 15-20% and in Malta it’s 75% or thereabouts. Also, we tend to put hamalli into power whereas other countries do not. I’m not about to be embarrassed because of other people’s behaviour and other people’s choices, though I am in agreement with the overarching meaning of Gonzi’s words.

Exactly my thoughts. Did he actually say that?

I can’t help thinking how differently Gonzi would have handled the journalists in that situation, except of course that there probably wouldn’t be that situation if he were still at the helm.

I cannot say for sure whether Filliberti’s claims are justified or not, but even in the off chance that they aren’t I find it impossible to imagine Gonzi reacting in such a shameful way to the prodding journalist.
