This Konrad Mizzi nomination somehow makes me feel Muscat’s planning to press the eject button on himself and Keith in timely fashion and leave Konrad here carrying the can. I mean: look how fast they found Larisa – one would think they could have made the same effort for cousin Ryan.

Time was when I steered closer to Labour than to the Nationalist Party, especially around the time when John Dalli was due to be up for a roasting by MEPs on his nomination as Commissioner. Roasting, or so I thought.

It left me blind with anger on realising that the Labour MEPs did their best to avoid bringing up Dalli’s role in how Mid-Med Bank and its assets devolved into HSBC. Dalli’s role in the affair stank to high heaven.

That the PN MEPs avoided the issue at all costs was for me at the time a given.

I have a gnawing suspicion that in Toni Abela’s case, we’re in for a log-roll.

It seems the writer hasn’t come across the translation of a speech Toni Abela made at the Labour Party General Conference, once or twice removed.

“Konrad? Fejn hu Konrad? Jien bhal Konrad. Jekk ikolli naghmel li xi hadd sinjur bil-mohbi, naghmlu, mela le. Ghala le?”

If that shouldn’t be an albatross around any candidate-auditor’s neck, then one can only put it down to the mesmerising presence of the aspirant.

I know that it is a great temptation to foist Dr Toni Abela on the European Court of Auditors but to be honest I would prefer the Nationalist Party not be a party to that plot.
