I agree that the buzzwords/phrases you mentioned ARE indeed very 90s – however I believe that Maltese DO love their catchphrases and their clichés. Listen to the way we speak (in Maltese) – so many stock phrases are bandied about. Our idiom base is limited and over-used. There’s an idiom/saying/cliché/proverb that can be twisted to suit every occasion, and when we hear new ‘catchphrases’ we latch on them and repeat them ad nauseam.

I’m not saying I like it (I don’t, actually, I cringe whenever I read ‘Pajjiz ta’ Mickey Mouse’ or ‘Ħadd wara Ħadd tasal ta’ kulħadd’ – to name just two) – however it’s a tool that can be useful in Maltese politics.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and maybe the Nationalist Party could well use it to their advantage too. If you want to draw the public’s attention to a certain ‘issue’ (e.g. Cafe Premier) then create an easy-to-remember, cool-sounding phrase and people will repeat it. This keeps the awareness of the said issue alive.

I know that I am cynically calling us brainless sheep. But for the most part, we are.
