Most parties are hard to place on the spectrum because the Left-Right paradigm has little relevance in modern politics.

Apparently Joseph Muscat himself said that the best person for the position of Deputy Leader is Konrad. Obviously there is no one within the party with the backbone to take him on lest they lose out on any of the benefits they are enjoying.

Back in 2008 Alfred Sant warned that democracy in Malta was facing a new threat, claiming that a clique which was not at the forefront of the political scene had the power to take decisions in their own interest. He warned that these people would try to take over the Labour Party and colonise it. This is what actually happened.
