I will not deny that there were people who were given a leg-up by the Nationalist Party. Some deserved it for their competence, others did not. The point I made was that those who felt entitled to a leg-up, and who did not get one, ended up being very bitter towards the party.

This is a problem that will continue to plague both parties and the main victim will be the efficiency and quality of the civil service and public agencies, unless some fundamental changes are made in the way people are appointed into public posts.

Affirmative action, positive discrimination and minority everything are still very much alive and kicking in 2016, Jozef. Indeed, the Democratic Party is obsessed with identity politics: first black president, first woman, first Jew, non-Christians, gays, Latinos, Asian Americans, trans-genders, cis-genders, sapiosexuals, #OscarsSoWhite and on and on. Everyone is a member of a minority group, everyone is a victim and everyone is constantly feeling offended.

Universities are being forced to change their names, pull down statues of their founders, cover historical murals which depict disagreeable historical events and create ‘safe spaces’ in which adult students can hide from real life and not listen to opinions they don’t agree with. I suppose that, next, all these snowflakes will be demanding to crawl back into their mothers’ wombs.

They say they are breaking down barriers but by obsessing about labels so much they seem to perpetuate them more than anything. The Democratic Party is a bit like interracial porn: claiming to normalise interracial sex but thriving by keeping the taboo alive. Sometimes I wonder if one would find any substance at all if identity politics were sucked out of the Democratic Party.

It is all so infuriating that it almost makes one want to vote for the foul-mouthed Donald Trump, who threatens to bring identity politics crashing down while firmly and gleefully sticking a middle-finger up in the air.

In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Marisa Micallef was never trusted by people in the Labour Party either. In Christmas 2009, the Labour party hosted lunch for its key people. She tried to suck up to a good number of them and failed, dismally.
