People in this society like to keep their heads well below the parapet because they’re more comfortable that way, not because they’re less brave or have less courage. Maltese people like to do what suits them – there is no civic conscience whatsoever. Not sticking up for what is right is just another manifestation of not giving a stuff about the common good as long as your own narrow interests are served. Maltese society is one massive, living case study of the Tragedy of the Commons.

A legislator, by definition, can never be irrelevant. Franco Debono and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando do not have seats in parliament. When they did, they were far from irrelevant. They are still not irrelevant now because one heads the Law Commission and the other the state council for science and technology. The fact that neither is suited to the post, that neither got it on merit, and that both are the results of the worst kind of political cronyism means that they, and the subject of their posts, are not irrelevant even now.

In Malta you don’t vote for the party you want to see in government. You vote to keep out the party you don’t want. On that basis one can never vote for a third party.
