Tax has to be paid at the end of the year when the income is made, wherever it is made and however it is made. If you make money in England in 2014 while you are living in Malta, you have to declare the income in your tax return for that year, even if you leave the money in England. And in any case, real estate sales are taxed there and then through capital gains tax.

This myth about money being taxed only when it is “repatriated” grew out of the many tax amnesties designed to encourage Maltese people to bring their money back into the country. And it is called an AMNESTY precisely because it waives prosecution of those who have committed the crime of hiding their money outside Malta for the purpose of not declaring it to the taxman. Had they kept the money outside the country but still declared it for tax, whether it is repatriated or not would make no difference.

So please stop spreading this repatriation/tax nonsense further.
