Absolutely.

The rotten eggs were brought out on proud display in May 2012. That would be the declaration of war Labour style that let its canons loose on Carm Mifsud Bonnici and Richard Cachia Caruana. The stench hasn’t left since. There’s a whopper of a pile of them.

This litter problem has little to do with how things are run by the government (any government) and everything to do with people’s ignorance and their not-in-my-backyard mentality, something very ‘typically Maltese’.

Order and cleanliness never came into being in Cospicua (a Labour stronghold) when Labour was elected three years ago. That shows how little the state government is involved in such issues and how much people’s mentality and also the local council can have an impact on the locality.

Government (local or otherwise) is only a necessary evil and people in authority should not be given undue importance. It has to be a thing of last resort.

Cleaning up the rubbish from in front of our door is certainly in our control. It is only when we want to clean the whole village or country that unfortunately we have to ask the politician.

Pavements are an absolute disgrace everywhere one looks. No sooner they are repaired (if indeed they ever are) they are promptly destroyed by heavy construction vehicles driving over them, with ‘wardens’ looking on benignly. Pointing it out to the warden as it happens will invariably get the response that ‘it’s not my job. I’m here to direct traffic.’ When I complained to our local council, they asked if I had ‘photographic evidence.’ When I did send such evidence on later occasions, still nothing happened and contractors simply walk away when they finish their projects leaving the area like a war zone.

Garbage and trash make the streets look like pig sties (worse, since pig sties are quite clean nowadays.) Councils’ inactivity is compounded by the ingrained selfishness of many residents who put out their garbage, often in open bags or flimsy paper bags, at any time of the day. One often sees bags being put out Saturday late afternoon with the garbage sitting there until Monday night.

I despair of this country.
