The Italian journalist speaks Italian as his native language and the TV programme is for an Italian audience, If the presenter spoke English they would need an interpreter.

Usually what happens is that the interviewer or reporter speaks his/her language, if the other person answers in a different language then the reporter summarises in his language – unless of course it is obvious that the other person does not understand the language of the reporter.

I have seen Hollande asked questions in Italian; he replies in French.

No. It is not generational. Young people between them use “tu” because it has always been like that. Otherwise nothing has changed. Lei is used if a person is not a friend or close family. Most people address even their mother in law in the third person (and I am talking about young people) – I don’t because mine had specifically asked me not to after many years.
