He is a career diplomat who passed a battery of examinations to join the foreign service; he has a masters degree in diplomatic studies and a second in the same field from Bruges. He was deputy chief of mission and was there already when the Labour Party was elected to government. He is also an extremely gifted diplomat, and comes from the sort of background where certain things (like manners and how to talk to people and solve problems) come naturally. The foreign service needs more people like that, not fewer, and if you ring the Minister’s private secretariat right now, that is exactly what they will tell you.

The fact that I have sons is not a subject related to my “private life” but a fact of life. Do you imagine that all people in public life, bar the Prime Minister and Mrs Muscat, are childless simply because they don’t shove their children into the limelight all the time?

How could I possibly have a son who is a forensic auditor? People who carry out forensic audits at that level are in their late 30s or 40s. I’m 51. Do the maths.

Why would this government commission one of my sons to do any job at all under the sun by direct order and on a special basis, let alone a forensic audit of Konrad Mizzi’s affairs?

For God’s sake, use your head. I apologise if I sound impatient, but dealing with this kind of rubbish thinking all day drives me round the bend. I mean, how much spoon-feeding do people need exactly? Does everything have to be spelled out to Maltese people over the age of 10?

Reuben, it’s quite possible to be a committed Roman Catholic and still have a rational mind, you know. What you do is put your religious beliefs in a little box and leave them there while you apply rationality to matters such as this. There is no higher power guiding either this web of crime or its resolution – people are doing both.

This is what I mean when I say that Maltese minds are deformed by early training into a near-total dearth of analytical skills, which often leads to disaster at a personal and national level. The last general election result was the direct consequence of exactly this: the inability to hear/read/listen to something and work out the wider meaning.

If I tell you that a pink elephant has just walked past me, you will work out that I am being sarcastic because you know (I hope) that pink elephants do not exist and even if they did, the likelihood of one walking past my window is nonexistent.

This is how a normal analytical mind works when it hears a remark like Cardona’s (and all of this in two seconds).

1. Does Daphne have a son who is a forensic auditor? No.

2. Does Daphne have a son who lives in Malta? No.

3. Does the government blindly hate Daphne and insult and persecute her sons at every given opportunity? Yes.

4. Is the government which blindly hates Daphne and insults and persecutes her sons likely to commission one of them for an audit even if they were auditors? No.

5. Even if it did, would they accept? No.

6. Which organisation commissions a man to carry out an inquiry into revelations made by his mother? None.

I despair, honestly. Learn how to think, because you might find yourself voting for Joseph like all those 167,000 other numbskulls did last time.

Why ‘hopefully’? That was not a metaphor. I meant people who can make and do useful things. Malta is just lawyers and bankers, to the exclusion of everyone else.
