I don’t wish to derail this topic, but I’ll say this much: If we enjoy those little terracotta miniatures of Malta, we should have kept it that way. Patches of “quaint” Malta existed in my childhood, just. Not any longer.

Most of the world lives in small houses in crowded areas, and in metropolises they live in a couple of rooms. But they don’t feel a pressing need to rent a weekend place a few miles away. They go out to museums, parks, cafes and whatever else is available. The real problem with Maltese people is that they DON’T want to get away and not that they do. That is exactly why they go to Gozo – because there are lots of people they know who are doing the same thing and they can carry on socializing with them. The thought of really getting away – to a place where nobody knows them – frightens them because they don’t exist unless somebody they know is seeing them existing. And when they go to, say, the Philippines or South America, their main preoccupation is uploading lots of pictures on Facebook so that people they know see what they are doing (otherwise it didn’t happen and they don’t exist). Maltese people have NO interior life. It’s something I observed a long, long time ago. And I have long wondered why that would be, because in intensely crowded conditions, the life of the spirit and the soul, and the ability to be private and with oneself, is far more important for one’s sanity, not less so. Maybe that is exactly why so many people are clearly crazy here, and not crazy in a good or eccentric way, either.

He is yet to resign that position in order to fully facilitate Mizzi’s engagement. Toni-Tubi can really put the cat among the Labour pigeons if he likes, by insisting he be retained as deputy leader.
