An audit will only highlight shortcomings in a company’s system of internal control.

Furthermore, the auditor will only see documents which support transactions that have been recorded in the accounting records.

Any transactions happening outside the ‘books’ or ‘off balance sheet’ will be unknown to the auditor.

I emphasise that where there is collusion, it is practically impossible to detect fraud and money laundering unless one of the parties to the transactions owns up.
