It will take ages. He might be enjoying the fruits of his labour with some superb tart in the Caribbean by that time.

Here are the seven signs that someone is living in denial.

(i) HE PERCEIVES HIMSELF TO BE ABOVE FAILURE. No need to resign from his ministerial post. Keith Schembri does it. The financial advisors uphold it. Financial gurus could have come up with nothing better given the state of trusts in Maltese banks.

(ii) HE TRIES TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE HE WASN’T TAKEN BY SURPRISE. That he had declared his New Zealand set-up in advance to the PM. That he had fessed up in the newspapers about his New Zealand trust before Daphne described the facts in detail on her online site.

(iii) HE THINKS HE CAN FIX IT ALL HIMSELF. That he is going to work harder and compensate us. This is quite ironic, a true smoking gun. Compensate us for what?

(iv) EVERYTHING HAS AN EXCUSE. He worked overseas. He made a lot of money. Tons of it. And he is not embarrassed by this and owes an apology to nobody. His plan, he further added at the Labour Party headquarters, was simply to “populate” the Panamanian corporation “with his assets”, a phrase that will live forever in Maltese-English, long after he retires on the soothing sandy beach of some banana republic in the Caribbean.

(v) HE IS NEVER AT FAULT. Hence, no need to resign.

(vi) EVERYONE ELSE IS WRONG. The PN. The Daphne who doubles as the PN. Dr. Fenech Adami who has been hit with a libel suit. They are all ignorant and can’t understand his financial prowess.

(vii) IT’S ALL A BIG CONSPIRACY where everyone on the other side is against him. Even Ann Fenech. Yet he set up a money-laundering mechanism and his explanation about it doesn’t add up. Such a set-up would be worthless under the scenario he described.
