Joseph Muscat won the election in 2013 with an unprecedented majority. Had he good intentions, that majority would have given him the perfect opportunity to take much needed difficult decisions that no party was willing to take before then.

One can think of serious measures to cut down on tax evasion for example, or banning spring hunting or hunting altogether just to mention a few.

Instead Muscat was solely interested in getting rich quick at the country's expense, and everything else that he did was fuelled primarily by this concern.

It is also evident that all the Labour Opposition's criticism of the Nationalist government was not genuine but simply envy at not being in a position to plunder the country's coffers.

I'm quite sure that when digging through old documents and contracts trying to find dirt on the previous government, Muscat and his band of thieves often think to themselves that the previous cabinet were a bunch of naive fidili who missed out on so many 'opportunities'.

What scares me at this point however is something else. Muscat's lack of action in the Panamagate affair, coupled with Labour's constant 'retailiation' of the sort 'look what you did' is slowly but surely eroding people's trust in politics.

The huge campaign that sold the myth of 'a new style of politics' to so many people has proven to be such a huge scam that these same people are left feeling almost incredulous and completely disillusioned.

But Labour's mud-throwing and arguments of 'you are corrupt too' are intended purely to make people think that corruption, sleaze and dirt are part and parcel of politics and both parties are the same.

Desensitising people to this filth will have a devastating effect on democracy.

God forbid Labour succeeds in making people think that both parties are corrupt and therefore we should just look the other way and get on with it. That would prove incredibly convenient to his merry band of thieves and truly tragic for Malta.
