You could perhaps have ignored Abela’s dreadful command of the language, had he given clear, to the point replies.

But it was embarrassing to watch him struggle and repeat himself, finding no escape from the questions. Interviews for positions are always conducted on the basis of competence – how can he not have known that?

Did he really think that his history and his attitude would not be questioned? How depressing it is to AGAIN be forced to confront the fact that the Prime Minister has so little respect for Maltese citizens that he would send somebody so incompetent and embarrassing to interview for a role that is so important.

I think the essential point here is that Belgians who speak only French are not handicapped in terms of education as Maltese who speak only Maltese. What can we assume, correctly, about somebody who speaks no language other than Maltese? We cannot assume the same about somebody who speaks only French.

You’re right, for the wrong reasons. This is not about TEFL. It’s about English being Malta’s language. Is it, or is it not? And let’s not have any more nonsense about “national” and “official” languages please.

Normal in Malta = Abnormal elsewhere.
