In reply to L.Gatt. Taking backhanders in business is one thing, but being so politically corrupt is another thing altogether. I lived the 80s too. It was not pleasant. Having to scrub toilets to get points to go to university, being penalised for going to a church school, being oppressed in freedom of speech and choice. The climate is the same with my cohort at the moment. At least the new stock are more brazen, because they don't know what it is like to live that way, and I hope they never will.

People with an education do. People who work in financial services and the related professions understood instantly, from day one, what was going on. That accounts for the collapse of the ‘switcher’ vote. But if you don’t understand what money is, how it is made, what governments deals are, what kickbacks are, what corruption is, what asset-concealing structures are, then where do you begin understanding?

They’re not helping themselves, though. That ’92 euros’ really did for them because it’s a figure people understand as ridiculous. At the vegetable truck this morning: “Kemm ghandi naghtik?” “Tini disghin euro ha nitfaghhom il-Panama.”

In reply to Ovid. I really do not think that Malta ever stooped so low, to be honest, and I have been through Malta's toughest times in the 80s. This white collar crime mechanism is somehow more creepy because it is intangible and out of control and keeps you wondering what more there is that you do not know of.
