And after the general election, we thought, "That's it. We're never going to join the European Union now. It's over." I remember bumping into Simon Busuttil in Valletta a few days after the general election and he was distraught at the reality that the European dream was over. I was still sleepwalking through it: no European passport; all hopes of that thoroughly smashed.

Who would have thought it.

And then even when that deus ex machina came about, which changed things just 22 months later, Joseph Muscat was illiberal, unprogressive and indecent enough to spend five years trying to get us to vote against membership.

The Mater Dei Hospital concrete came back to haunt him. He'll probably be the next casualty (not victim) of this scandal.

He's just a salesman who's lost his touch with his customers; we the people. We don't like what he's trying to sell to us. He said he had a roadmap. The people around him obviously had other agendas.

Twenty-five years of learning were spent down the drain. He could have learnt a lot, both from the good and mostly from the bad of his predecessors but instead he fared worse then all of them.

In just three years we were inundated with wrong-doings and scandals every month. If you don't understand that this did obliterate all the good done in the meantime then I'm sorry for you and all those who believed the pre-election crap.

I remember the 80s very slightly so I would not be able to recount incidents or episodes. One thing I do recall however, is the feeling of fear in the air.

The feeling that you have to be careful what to say and to whom, that the name 'PN' was almost taboo (we said it anyway), where to wave the PN flag (we waved them anyway), the relief in 1987 and the renewed fear in the elections of 1992 - followed by despair in 1996 which was thankfully short lived. From what I learnt as I grew older this fear was certainly justified.

The Labour Party is once again trying to instil this atmosphere. They are actively trying to subdue those standing up against them whilst harping, for the benefit of their supporters, on anything which might save their faces, no matter how insignificant it might be.

I am well aware that there are a good number of people who will believe whatever they are fed by the Labour Party. But what the Prime Minister, Konrad Mizzi and all those associated with them do not seem to understand is the power of the media, of social media, of technology and of globalisation.

No, it is not possible to hide news. No, it is not possible to give the impression all is well.

We know. The people who elected you know. The whole world knows. You cannot silence the world. You have no way out. I will not allow you to instil any fear in me.
