Oh, Marie Benoit, who never missed a Sunday running down the Nationalists when they were in government and always mentioning her bottle of champagne in the fridge waiting for a Labour victory. But Alfred Sant let her down in 1998, 2003 and 2008 when he lost the elections and Marie’s champagne went flat.

Since her Joseph won we have heard of no bubbly-popping in celebration, and not one article praising her idol in these three years. Instead she writes non-stop about dinners and concerts.

When a man loves his country, he makes his way into a powerful position with a large budget for capital expenditure. Then he gives a generous salary to his wife for doing precious nothing as charity begins at home.

Once the basics are covered, he signs a couple of deals with a few shady dictators and keeps them secret. He then sets up a secret company in a shady jurisdiction and a trust in a tax haven and gets the prime minister’s chief of staff to do the same for the prime minister.

Loving your country takes hard work and careful planning.
