I don't like hearing English spoken by Maltese people on TV and radio. It seems false and awkward. The accent, vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation are generally terrible even among those brought up speaking nothing but, and when they are perfect or near-perfect, that has all the hallmarks of a small caste. Languages should be used as and when appropriate. I wouldn't dream of speaking English in a context where people are speaking Maltese, so I find the thought of speaking English on radio or TV, when most of the audience don't speak it naturally, almost offensive - rather like those individuals who insist on speaking Maltese at lunch or supper when there are people at the table who don't understand it.

I absolutely don't agree with having candidates who communicate solely in English. Adults who have lived all their lives in Malta without learning how to speak Maltese are intellectually or psychologically suspect, probably both.

I have often reflected about this point vis-à-vis other private TV stations, particularly in our context, the church and political parties.

In my limited exposure to all TV stations l still get the impression that these private stations just want to be in direct competition to the national station.

There is hardly evident efforts to produce focused programmes that characterise the particular station's mission and interests.

At a practical level Super1 comes closest to this ideal, particularly when the party it represents is in opposition, but not much less so even when in power. This is quite evident in the current circumstances.

I believe that the NET potential and actual audience is much more varied in its interests, thus calling for more strategically focused productions as you suggest.

This issue is not that simple because even the PN has its fair share of comparable hardcore supporters who need to be nurtured by the party's TV station.

Then there are the real-world
