We did indeed grow up among them. And when our parents/relatives/friends were suspended for months (Cable & Wireless – pension fund also stolen, incidentally), locked out (St Luke’s Hospital), cowed into submission (bank employees), I resolved to never vote for Labour under any circumstances.

Just because 25 years have passed, it doesn’t mean that the 1970s and 1980s never happened.
And yes, you are perfectly right. Twenty-five years of democracy, liberated trade and broadcasting, a free press and judiciary have failed to impress our peers. If anything, all that has lulled them into a false sense of security because, as you say, they were/are intellectually unchallenged.

Come on – you and I both grew up among them. If you close your eyes when they’re talking, you’ll forget for a moment that you’re not at Sliema Pitch/Neptunes/Fortizza 35 years ago. They still sound exactly the same. Foot-binding of the mind: that’s what happens when you live intellectually unchallenged in a glorified village for the whole of your life, socializing with the same people you socialized with when you were at school.
